Julius K. Nyerere: Radical Equality and Socialism (Ujamaa)

This study carries out a critical analysis of the Tanzanian socialism, popularly known as \u27Ujamaa,\u27 during the reign of President Julius Kambarage Nyerere (1960\u27s-1985). Ujamaa was used by Nyerere as a means to put into practice his radical conception of economic equality in order t build an egalitarian society. The study discovered that Ujamaa as an economic system did not yield the expected results due to some of its bad policies and ignoring the traditional critique on socialism given by Aristotle and other prominent philosophers. The study recommends that, in order for any state to develop and grow economically, a combination of good values from various economic systems is necessary. Such a combination should go hand-in-hand with the practice of social justice, which is a necessary component in assuring basic necessities to individuals as well as contributing to the common good of the state
