Survivors is a book-length collection of seven short stories. The stories were not planned to be a thematic unit focusing on any one geographical area or time period, like Joyce\u27s Dubliners or Anderson\u27s Winesburg, Ohio. Yet one theme stands out in the collected stories: Surviving in a difficult, and often alien, environment, for example--the struggle of a Vietnamese family new to Missouri and the struggle of a native American Indian to face death alone with dignity. The struggle and the endurance make a comment on the person\u27s strength and inner resources. Contents: The sound of mourning -- The perpetuation -- Small suffrage -- Lady slipper -- The caretaker -- The executive chair -- Mr. Roberts\u27 perspective
