The article deals with the contribution of lexicographers to the question of dictionary quality, which is here understood as three user-based requirements: applicability, reliability and accessibility. Explicit reflections on these problems are primarily found in the outside matter of dictionaries. To chart what can be termed the common lexicographic consciousness on the quality of dictionaries, 155 bilingual LSP dictionaries have been analysed. Above and beyond this common base on quality, indication is made of either divergent views or more advanced, individual ideas of dictionary quality.
