Luliang (China), man smoking a bamboo pipe

Luliang, Yunnan Province, China - 1945This turbaned Muslim, lights a water pipe as he pauses for a smoke. The water pipe is of bamboo and filled partially with water. Where he's holding the stick for lighting, he has a pinch of tobacco and he draws the smoke across the water to cool it. It has to travel up the length of pipe, so it does keep the smoke cool. He is selling candy. In his baskets is a taffy-like confection. He chisels off pieces as needed and weighs the pieces on a hand held scale. He uses his baskets as a stand or table for displaying his wares. The scale is partially hidden in the center basket. In the background are sapling logs used either for lumber or fire wood. Probably more so for lumber because of the climate of the region, heating of a home or building was not that necessary. The temperature was constantly mild and pleasant.GrayscaleBox
