This article analyzes the role played by the Constitution of Cádiz in the Chilean revolutionary process. It suggests that even though the Limenian viceroy, José Fernando de Abascal was never a convinced constitutionalist, he was obligated to support Gaditano constitutionalism as a persuasive instrument against the pressure coming from Chilean revolutionaries. It begins with a summary of the fundamental principles of the Chilean autonomist movement and Viceory Abascal’s condescending reaction to the creation of Santiago’s Junta of 1810.
