Early secondary schools were relatively small and made few demands on the principal\u27s time. With the growth of the schools the responsibilities of the principal have grown proportionately. As these responsibilities increased, it became necessary for him to share these duties with an assistant. This assistant began taking over routine activities mostly those of a clerical nature.
