Art After Hours: Learning to Work Together Through Art

This presentation will discuss how art activities can be used to build children\u27s social literacy skills. The art component of the Haldeman After School Program in Eastern Kentucky is using group projects to encourage students to work together. The children’s collaborative abilities have been developed using a variety of art projects throughout the year. Children work in groups or share materials. Through art projects, the children learn that working with others can be fun. Though they are enjoying a creative outlet, they are also learning valuable and necessary life skills. The Haldeman After School Program offers a safe, child-centered, nurturing after school enrichment program for local elementary students at the Haldeman Community Center. The Haldeman Community Center\u27s mission is to provide a place for those in the community to meet for fellowship, as well as to provide children with a safe haven away from drugs and promote the educational, recreational and social well-being of the community\u27s residents
