French Translations of Sense and Sensibility The publishing history of literary texts sheds light on their reading, especially in the case of translations which reflect cultural exchanges between countries. Apart from the survey of a work's different translations, it is necessary to gather information about the publishers, the translators, and their relationship, in order to understand the publishing context. The detailed analysis of each edition (physical characteristics, lay-out of the text and “paratext”) reveals the publishing intention. Through the example of the French translations of Sense and Sensibility, this article investigates the publishing mechanisms of translations, and proposes a methodology for its publishing history.
