Quilombo tells the story of Palmares, a colony of mostly runaway slaves, organized in the state of Alagoas (Northeastern Brazil) during the 17th century. After directing Ganga Zumba (1963) and Xica (1978), Diegues undertook Quilombo (1984) to keep exploring the dimensions of the African Diaspora in Brazil. When working on Quilombo, he focused on two issues : slavery and the claims of the blacks during the period of Palmares existence, and Palmares as a historical symbol when Brazilians were trying to return to democracy after twenty years of military dictatorship. In Quilombo, Diegues represents Palmares (and Brazil) as the Promised Land where blacks were to rebuild themselves and help reconstruct their country without slavery. In the film,...
