NCSR: The Role of Marine Reserves in Ecosystem-based Fishery Management

Module Description: The NCSR Marine Fisheries Series is provided by the Northwest Center for Sustainable Resources and includes ten modules. This series is designed to cover issues related to âmarine fisheries with an emphasis on those species that are commercially harvested in the United States. The ten modules include Marine Fisheries Overview, Marine Fisheries â Introduction and Status, Marine Fisheries â Causes for Decline and Impacts, Marine Fisheries â Management and Proposed Solutions, Declining Expectations â The Phenomenon of Shifting Baselines, The Role of Marine Reserves in Ecosystem-based Fishery Management, The Decline of Atlantic â A Case Study, Comprehensive Resources for NCSR Marine Fisheries Series, Shrimp Farming â Environmental and Social Impacts, and Where Does Your Seafood Come From?The Role of Marine Reserves in Ecosystem-based Fishery Management is the sixth of ten modules. In this module âunderstanding of the benefits of marine reserves is discussed, as well as some of the considerations in the design and management of marine reserve networks.â The module can be taught independently or as part of the series. Module Contents:The PowerPoint presentation includes lecture notes, defines marine reserves, and âdescribes the benefits they provide within and outside their boundaries.âThe 38-page document provides information about the module and includes seven sections: NCSR Marine Fisheries Series, The Role of Marine Reserves in Ecosystem-based Fishery Management, Objectives, General Lecture Outline, PowerPoint Presentation with Instructor Notes, Suggested Classroom Activity, and Resources.Â
