and shoes. By the time I got out of the tent, a terrific barrage of fire was in the air from naval ships in Arzew harbor and shore batteries Rifles, 50s. 20, 40 & 90 mm. Full moon but with very light layer of cloud making search lights in- effective. There had been no warn- ing from radars. First indication was sound of planes and 3 or 4 bombs in Arzew and harbor. Planes, apparently 4 were hidden from sight at all times by clouds, but could be heard clearly not so very high. One came very low over our position still above cloud layer. Heard the whine of one bomb. Apparently it was a dud landing � mile away just at foot of bluf. Saw it explode next evening just after supper. The barrage is a beautiful sigh
