FAULTY ENGLISH : Common Mistakes in Japanese English-language Journals

I introduced some 40 mistakes picked up from the English-language daily papers issued in Japan at a study meeting of The Japan Association of Practical English held on March 19,1988 at Waseda University. In this short paper an attempt was made to sort out the mistakes and to analyze them together with the ones which have appeared since then. They are grouped into five. (1) The errors derived from the structural differences between the Japanese language and the English language. Mistakes in concord-especially of the be-verbs on which the awareness of the Japanese is weak. (2) Mistakes in pronouns as their use in Japanese is not as rigid as in English. (3) Some words that have always been used incorrectly. Problems of redundance. (4) Other grammatical mistakes.
