Aspectos fundamentales para el diseño de un refuerzo estructural

This article summarizes and analyses, conceptually, some ofthe fundamental aspects that should to be considered whenundertaking a work of structural strengthening. It is describedthe rational process that must be taken to decide if astrengthening is necessary or not. A conceptual analysis ofdifferent alternatives of strengthening, its types and itsmobilization is illustrated. It is also summarized the requiredverifications doing a special attention to the union betweenthe reinforcement and the original structure as well as to thepossibilities that offer the combined use of in situ tests withthe numerical simulation and, finally, analyses some aspectsrelated to the use of modern equipments for the strengthening,as synthetic resins and other products. In conclusion, the firstthing that the technician must consider it is if thereinforcement is necessary or not and, in affirmative case, tolimit the parts or members of the structure to becomestrengthened as well as the resistant properties that must beimproved, paying special attention to the election of the typeof strengthening and the materials to use. It implies a hightechnical exigency in knowledge of materials, in methods ofanalysis and verification to the technician responsible of thestrengthening. On the other hand, the economy of means andthe sustainability, force to obtain the highest collaboration ofthe original structure, which is a determinant factor in thedesign of the strengthening.El presente artículo tiene por objeto resumir y analizar, deforma conceptual, algunos de los aspectos fundamentalesque deben ser considerados al acometer un trabajo derefuerzo estructural. Se describe el proceso racional quellevará a decidir si el refuerzo es necesario o no. Se realizaun análisis conceptual de distintas alternativas de refuerzo,de los tipos de refuerzo y de su movilización. También seresumen las comprobaciones que deben llevarse a cabo,haciendo una atención especial a la unión entre el refuerzo yla estructura original así como a las posibilidades quebrinda la utilización combinada de ensayos in situ con lasimulación numérica y, finalmente, se analizan algunosaspectos relacionados con la utilización de materialesmodernos para el refuerzo, como resinas sintéticas y otrosproductos. En conclusión, lo primero que el técnico debeplantearse es si el refuerzo es necesario o no y, en casoafirmativo, acotar muy bien las partes o elementos de laestructura que deben ser reforzados así como laspropiedades resistentes o deformacionales que deben sermejoradas, prestando especial atención a la elección del tipode refuerzo y de los materiales a emplear. Ello implica unaelevada exigencia técnica en conocimiento de materiales, enmétodos de análisis y de comprobación al técnicoresponsable del refuerzo. Por otra parte, la economía demedios y la sostenibilidad, obligan a lograr la máximacolaboración de la estructura original, lo cual es un factordeterminante en el diseño del refuerzo
