土佐浄瑠璃の脚色法(四) : 新道成寺「定家」の位相

"Teika", one of the well-known Tosa Joruri works, has repeatedly been performed since the middle of Genroku period. The stage adaptation of "Teika" has a double-structure "Teika" as a major plot and "Shin-Dojoji" as a minor plot. The major plot deals with the love affairs of Teika and Shikishi-Naishinno, and the world of Dojoji, as the minor plot, was put into this major plot. "Teika" in Tosa Joruri has its predecessors, that is, "Teika" in Yokyoku (Noh music) and "Ogurayama-hyakunin-isshu" in Ko-Joruri. "Teika" in Tosa Joruri is closely related to "Ogurayama-hyakunin-isshu". "Teika" in Tosa Jornri, however, has lost the meritorious element for talented waka poets and miraculous element of devine protection for believers of gods and buddhas both seen in "Ogurayama-hykunin-isshu". In this "Teika" therefore, Ooezaemon-Tadashige, Teika\u27s retainer, fights for him against Tairanosakon-Tokikuni who loves Shikishi-Naishinno and naturally condemns Teika, and after all, Lord Karyu (a court noble) has to arbitrate the dispute. After this, by the witness of his own retainer Tokikuni is found out to have laid a plot for Teika and Shikishi-Naishinno. The two having been proven to be innocent are set free from exile. Thus the dispute among people is led to solution by people without assistance of gods and buddhas. Battle scenes without divine protection put into the second section of the play is a characteristic shared by other works of Tosa Joruri of that time such as "Shioyabunsho-monogatari", "Shiogamadaijin" or "Genji-Junidan". "Shin-Dojoji", the minor plot, is a revised version of "Dojoji-mono" in Yokyoku inserted into the major plot. The reason why this was done is the fact that Dojoji was very popular among people that time. "Dojoji" was often performed not only as Noh play but also in Joruri and Kabuki as well. It was especially popular as an interlude given by ayatsuri-kyogen-tayu in the performance of Joruri. We can assume that this type of "Dojoji" as an interlude was put into Joruri to add an appropriate minor plot to the work. We have here made observations how "Teika" in Tosa Joruri, with its two-fold characteristic, was integrated into one well-balanced totality without distortion. Such well-known traditional source as "Teika" with the additional stage adaptation of popular "Dojoji" made up one interesting work effectively attracting a large audience of the times with a touch of freshness
