台湾協会の成立とその発展 : 日本植民政策の一側面

Taiwan Kyokai (Association of Formosa) was founded in 1898. The purpose of the association was to give indirect aid to the management of Taiwan, which became Japan\u27s colony as the result of the Sino-Japanese war, as well as to give Japanese people information about Taiwan. Gen. KATSURA Taro, the second Governor-General of Taiwan, was elected the president. The organization of Taiwan Kyokai was expanded by inviting the Japanese influential statesmen and businessmen Taiwan Kyokai established Taiwa Kyokai Gakko (a school attached to Association of Formosa) in Tokyo in 1900 for the purpose of training people who would work in Taiwan and South China. After the victory over Russia in the Russo-Japanese war, Japan made drastic alteration to her attitude to Taiwan and the mainland China became guilty of agression. Taiwan Kyokai expanded its arena of activities to the mainland China and changed its name to Toyo Kyokai (Oriental Association). Thus, in accord with the expansion of Japan\u27s imperialism, Toyo Kyokai developed its activities to the mainland China giving indirect support to Japan\u27s imperialism; however, because of the defeat in the World War II, the association was obliged to be disorganized
