Compared with the prefunctionalized substrates in traditional cross-coupling reactions, carboxylic acid derivatives are easier to handle and commercially available in a broad scope, making them ideal starting materials to build biaryl structures. Copper has been demonstrated to decarboxylate carboxylic acids. There are also several examples of copper-mediated oxidative coupling reactions with two nucleophilic components.
