The Criterion y la cultura española: génesis de una relación. T. S. Eliot, Antonio Marichalar, John B. Trend y la Revista de Occidente

One of the cornerstones of the British literary review The Criterion, founded in 1922 by poet and editor T.S. Eliot that lasted until 1939 was its strong universal spirit, which led to the inclusion of texts and reports on the culture of other countries in its pages. The presence of Spain was notable, thanks mainly to the chronicles sent from Madrid by Antonio Marichalar, the contributions of English musicologist and hispanist John Brande Trend, and the reviews of the Revista de Occidente. The aim of this work is not to study the content of these contributions, but to explore and clarify the beginnings of the relationship between Eliot and those who facilitated the reception of the Spanish culture in his review. To this end, the extensive correspondence of the English-speaking poet has proved an invaluable and the main source for this study.Uno de los fundamentos de la revista inglesa The Criterion, fundada en 1922 por el poeta y editor T.S. Eliot y viva hasta 1939, fue su fuerte espíritu universal, que se tradujo en la inclusión en sus páginas de textos y reseñas sobre la cultura de otros países. La presencia de España fue notable, gracias sobre todo a las crónicas enviadas desde Madrid por Antonio Marichalar, a los textos del musicólogo e hispanista inglés John Brande Trend, y a las reseñas que daban noticia de la Revista de Occidente. El objetivo de este trabajo no es estudiar el contenido de estas aportaciones, sino esclarecer el inicio de la relación entre Eliot y quienes hicieron posible en su revista la recepción de la cultura española; para ello, la principal fuente de la que se parte es la extensa correspondencia del poeta inglés
