First, they will go to town to get married and baptize their offspring. But they are told to go back to the river and salvage their property and salt some meat for next fall...." (ibid., p 142)...Fournaur "Owes 954# to M. FRANCOEUR, De Clouet seized 700 pots of butter to cover payment by Francoeur. On the other hand, Francoeur owes money to Fourham and this debt can only be for whiskey..." 16 June 1770 (Ibid: p 207) - At the Arkansas Demazellieres to the General. To inform him that the FRANCOEUR have come from the Ark. River with women and children! they are in greatest misery, the children not even having a shirt... has promised to help them bring their furniture from the river...also ordered them to go to the city to get married and have the children baptized. These people would love to settle at the fort. Since other children have not been baptized he suggests that the General send a minister or a monk whom he would send back as soon as everyone has been baptized...." On P 208 is this which is not clear even to the transcriber but appears to be a continuation of litigation between Francoeur and Fournier (variously spelled) ...."He owes FRANCOEUR money, 934 piastres, for salted meat which was sold to him at Point Coupee in 1770. Demazellieres has the paper stating this fact...." 15 June 1770 - (Ibid: p 212) Lambert to Demazellieres.. .Mr. Lambert request you to order M. Tounoir (Note: the transcriber-translator seemed to have trouble deciding whether this man'x name began with F or T) to give back the oil he took in the wagon of M. FRANCOEUR without his consent...." 17 June 1770 - (Ibid: p 217-218) BROTHERS FRANCOEUR to Demazellieres.. .At Post of Arkansas.. .."The undersigned people, hunters in the River of the Arkansas for 25 years, request permission to marry the savage women with whom they are living and by whom they have had children, in the Roman Apostolic Church in order to comply with their duties as Christians. Request to permit them to stay at the Post since they do not have the money or the food to go to the city. Also request permission to go on hunting on the river so that they can pay what they owe and be able to marry and have their children baptized. A Gross for signature X (NOTE; So Sad...brothers not named in the translation! Wonder if in original... probably not) Demazellieres adds note: Granted - 17 June 1770 27 June 1770 (Ibid: p 143)... "Fournan was ordered to return the oil stolen from FRANCOEUR'S Canoe. Fournana didnt want to comply so a sergeant and a detachment of men sent to insure obedience. He complied. Other hunters have been tricked by this man...." (Ibid: p 225-227)...To inform the General (written by Demazellieres at Arkansas) that in spite of his orders Tournoir refused to give back the oil he took from FRANCOEUR, He had to send a sargent who want to be paid for his work. Tournoir pretended not to have received any oil. Since Tounoir owes 944 piastres to FRANCOEUR for meat (the paper for it being in the hands of Clouet) asks the General to order this to be paid since FRANCOEUR does not have anything but his gun. Also wants to inform him about a store-keeper (name illegible, may be Laninie) (NOTE: again probably LaVigne) who did some deals with the poor FRANC0EURS. He is no more store-keeper but one could tell many stories from the time he held this post....."
