Engaging Creative Arts Cultures in the Scholarship of Teaching

This session examines the design, implementation and effectiveness of a teaching, learning and assessment strategy in a new specialist creative arts university. The strategy is designed to reflect the needs of both the institution and its individuals. Both academic and non-academic staff are engaged through a process of recognition of individuals’ achievement through varied activities. But embedding the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is most effectively implemented by developing funded research activities: the scholarship of discovery that enables the institution to develop as a learning organization. The effectiveness of the strategy and its outcomes is measured and evaluated to demonstrate that effectiveness. The innovative approach taken is an opportunity to start small, and to develop the SoTL culture incrementally within the creative arts disciplines, with support from the university executive. This paper offers an opportunity for reflection on the implementation of SoTL in a range of academic environments and sharing of best practice in evaluating success
