Diachrony and synchrony in general Linguistics Course (s): From Courses to Editing

This dissertation was developed with the objective of investigating the elaboration of Ferdinand de Saussure, a 20th century linguist who brought a new point of view to Linguistics, allowing Linguistics to become a modern science. First, we present the nineteenth-century studies that were based on the diachronic point of view, through the comparisons of languages, emphasizing the research of Rask, Boop, Grimm and Schleicher. This investigation was important so that we could verify the process of distancing Saussure's ideas from contemporary linguists. Saussure began his work as a comparator by studying the vowel system in the Indo-European in 1878. In that year, he published in Leipzig the Work on the Primitive System of the Indo-European Vowels and On the Absolute Genitive in Sanskrit in 1880. However, the genevan author was ahead of his time, and from his many questions shows us a new perspective on the studies of language: the synchrony. The result of his reflections, in the form of teachings, was only presented to the public after his death with the publication of the Course in General Linguistics, posthumous work, published in 1916, by alumni and colleagues of Ferdinand de Saussure, Bally and Sechehaye. They gathered a few handwritten sheets by the professor himself and notes from the students who attended the three general linguistics courses between 1907 and 1911 at the University of Geneva. Thus, based on a comparative analysis between the students' books that participated in the courses and the edition of the book Course in General Linguistics, we sought to point out the course of elaboration of Saussure's theorization about the conceptual pair diachrony and synchrony. Afterwards, we present the question of order regarding these perspectives on the language, because the editors chose not to follow the same order of presentation of the content of Saussure's classes; so we raised the following hypothesis: was there a distortion of the teachings of the Genevan master due to the fact that the Course in General Linguistics did not follow the order of the courses taught? In order to answer this question in our research, we initially used the Course in General Linguistics and the students' notebooks that attended the master classes, edited by Eisuke Komatsu, George Wolf and Roy Harris, so that we could compare the order of exposure of the concepts of diachrony and synchrony in both the edition and the notebooks of the students. In addition, we present the critical issues that allowed us to verify a new way of looking at the issue of the order of the courses and the edition, mainly the critical edition of Tulio de Mauro. In addition, we explored linguists who spoke about this issue in the CLG in order to verify if there was distortion of the teachings of the master genevan during this course of elaboration.Dissertação (Mestrado)Esta dissertação foi desenvolvida com o macro objetivo de investigar o percurso de elaboração de Ferdinand de Saussure, linguista do século XX, que trouxe um novo ponto de vista para a Linguística, possibilitando que esta se tornasse uma ciência moderna. Apresentamos, em um primeiro momento, os estudos do século XIX que se baseavam no ponto de vista diacrônico, por meio das comparações entre as línguas, enfatizando as pesquisas de Rask, Boop, Grimm e Shcleicher. Essa investigação foi importante para que pudéssemos verificar o processo de distanciamento das ideias de Saussure dos linguistas contemporâneos a ele. Saussure iniciou seus trabalhos como comparatista ao estudar o sistema das vogais no indo-europeu em 1878. Nesse ano, publicou em Leipzig o Trabalho sobre o sistema primitivo das vogais indo-europeias e Sobre o genitivo absoluto em sânscrito em 1880. No entanto, o autor genebrino estava à frente do seu tempo, e a partir dos seus muitos questionamentos nos mostra uma nova perspectiva sobre os estudos da língua: a sincronia. O resultado das suas reflexões, em forma de ensinamentos, só foi apresentado ao público após sua morte, com a publicação do Curso de Linguística Geral, obra póstuma, publicada em 1916, por ex-alunos e colegas de Saussure, Bally e Sechehaye. Eles reuniram algumas folhas manuscritas pelo próprio professor e anotações dos alunos que assistiram aos três cursos de linguística geral entre 1907 e 1911 na Universidade de Genebra. Assim, a partir de uma análise comparativa entre os cadernos dos alunos que participaram dos cursos e a edição do livro Curso de Linguística Geral, buscamos destacar o percurso de elaboração da teorização de Saussure quanto ao par conceitual diacronia e sincronia. Logo após, dirigimo-nos à questão da ordem quanto a essas perspectivas sobre a língua, pois os editores optaram por não seguir a mesma ordem de apresentação do conteúdo das aulas de Saussure; assim levantamos a seguinte hipótese: houve distorção dos ensinamentos de Saussure pelo fato de a ordem do Curso de Linguística Geral não seguir a mesma nos cursos ministrados? Para responder a essa questão, em nossa pesquisa utilizamos como corpus inicialmente o Curso de Linguística Geral e os cadernos dos alunos, editados por Eisuke Komatsu, George Wolf e Roy Harris, a fim de que pudéssemos comparar a hierarquia de exposição dos conceitos de diacronia e sincronia tanto na edição quanto nos cadernos dos alunos. Além disso, apresentamos as edições críticas que nos permitiram verificar uma nova forma de olhar a questão da ordem dos cursos e a edição, principalmente a de Tullio de Mauro. Ademais, exploramos linguistas que discursaram sobre essa questão no CLG no intuito de verificarmos se houve distorção dos ensinamentos do mestre genebrino durante esse percurso de elaboração
