Ferdinand de Saussure: entre la langue et des langues

The concept of language thought by Ferdinand de Saussure and made public through the Course in General Linguistics (CLG) in 1916 can be considered a watershed in the history of linguistic studies. From this concept, it was possible to grant autonomy to Linguistics, giving it its place among the modern sciences. However, with the reception of the CLG in various parts of the world throughout the twentieth century, some criticisms of this concept were established, many of which are based on the consideration of language strictly as a formal object that moves away from its relationship with empirical and social phenomena. Nevertheless, in our view, in the content of the CLG itself it is possible to note that the delimitation of language as Linguistics’ object of study is not unrelated to socially instituted facts. This can be seen when Saussure deliberately or unintentionally evokes particular languages in their language-delimiting trajectory as a system of signs, establishing an intimate relationship between theory and empiricism. Considering this, this work is guided by the hypothesis that, within Saussurean theorizing, language, as an object of study of Linguistics, cannot be completely formalized. In order to think about this hypothesis, we first analyze three documents in which Saussure develop the study of particular languages: the manuscript set Versification Française, a notebook entitled Cahier Parny, and the folder number 18 in the Notes sur l'étymologie des noms de lieux de la Suisse romande et sur les patois romands et chablaisiens. By analyzing these materials, we aim to understand Saussure's treatment of languages so that we can contrast it with the way the linguist deals with language, understood as a general system. A partir dele, foi possível conceder autonomia à Linguística, outorgando a ela seu lugar entre as ciências modernas. Entretanto, com a recepção do CLG em vários lugares do mundo, ao longo do século XX, estabeleceram-se algumas críticas direcionadas a esse conceito saussuriano, muitas da quais se constituem a partir da consideração da língua como um objeto estritamente formal que se afasta da relação com os fenômenos empíricos e sociais. Contudo, a nosso ver, no conteúdo do próprio CLG é possível notar que a delimitação da língua enquanto objeto de estudo da Linguística não se dá sem relação com os fatos instituídos socialmente. Isso pode ser percebido quando Saussure evoca, deliberadamente ou não, as línguas particulares em sua trajetória de delimitação do sistema de signos, estabelecendo uma relação íntima entre teoria e empiria. Considerando isso, este trabalho é orientado pela hipótese de que, no seio da teorização saussuriana, a língua, enquanto objeto de estudo da Linguística, não é passível de uma formalização completa. Para buscarmos caminhos de reflexão acerca dessa hipótese, nos dedicamos, primeiramente, à análise de três documentos em que Saussure se volta ao estudo das línguas particulares: o conjunto de manuscritos Versification Française, um caderno intitulado Cahier Parny, e a pasta número 18 do arquivo Notes sur l'étymologie des noms de lieux de la Suisse romande et sur les patois romands et chablaisiens. Com a análise desses materiais, objetivamos compreender o modo de tratamento dispensado por Saussure às línguas, para que possamos contrapô-lo à forma como o linguista lida com a língua. Para que essa contraposição possa ser feita, investigamos outros documentos de Saussure que se enquadram no âmbito da Linguística Geral: o conjunto de manuscritos Primeira Conferência, suas Notes pour le Cours III e o próprio CLG
