Chanting repertoire and its selection for Liturgy in the context of the Second Vatican Council

MišiasThis article discusses an issue concerning the repertoire of hymns and the choice of them for the liturgy. It analyses the importance of music and lyrics of the hymn from the perspective of the Second Vatican Council’s Liturgical reform and covers the styles of music and their suitability for the Liturgy of the holy Mass. The aim of the article is to discuss the choice of the repertoire of hymns for the liturgy in prospect of the Second Vatican Council. The object of the research is liturgical hymns. The tasks of the research: 1. to discuss the importance of hymn lyrics in the aspect of the Second Vatican Council’s teaching; 2. to analyze the criteria for the choice of music for a liturgical hymn; 3. to discuss the suitability of musical styles for the liturgical repertoire. Research methods used: aspectual analysis, structural analysis, synthesis and generalization, comparative method. The main literature and sources used: Philippe Robert’s studies “Chanter la liturgie” and “Chant et liturgie au service de la louange”; the Second Vatican Council’s Liturgical Constitution Sacrosanctum, Concilium; and the Sacred Congregation of Ceremonies’ instruction Musicam Sacrum (1967). The first task of the research was completed by answering the question of what are the principles of liturgical music and hymns and the second one – by analyzing the criteria for the choice of music for a liturgical hymn. After presenting the main requirements for music and lyrics, the suitability of musical styles for the liturgical repertoire was discussed. The material presented in the article allows drawing these conclusions: First, the liturgical hymn should be perfectly linked with the liturgical action and the celebration of the Mystery of the Eucharist; it is unsuitable to follow only one’s personal or common knowledge.
