Sangadzhi-Garya reminisces about evil spirits that allegedly dwelled in the dunes when he was working on the construction of the Kizlyar-Astrakhan railway in 1942: The dunes are a habitat for many living beings, including hares, ferrets, and gophers. Apart from them, it is where evil spirits dwell. At night they confuse travelers who end up going in circles. At dawn evil spirits disappear and people can break free of these cursed circles. Evil spirits also entangle the legs of horses. Such horses stand still until dawn and only then they start moving. In the past evil spirits were much stronger. Once I was riding a horse at night when white foam appeared on both sides of my horse. I stopped, and could not understand where the foam came from.
