Aim of the study was the evaluation of the in vitro ruminal degradation of four different cuts of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) grass dried using two different methods. The first four alfalfa cuts (collected every 28 d) were dried in a convection oven at 65°C or dehydrated at 800°C, ground and used as the substrate for a 24 h in vitro fermentation study with ruminal liquor. The volume of gas produced was recorded every 30 min. and ammonia and VFA concentrations in the fermentation liquid as well as true degradability were determined. The drying method did not affect final gas volume but the dehydrated alfalfa determined a lower rate of gas production than the oven-dried alfalfa (–6%, P < 0.05).
