Having recalled the rich history of the «sprezzatura» (offhandedness), the present article brings together the «metaphysics of facility» displayed in Book II of Marsilio Ficino’s Platonic Theology of the Immortality of Souls and the view of «grace» in Baldassare Castiglione. Although the latter appears at first sight to question the metaphysics of Marsilio Ficino, by describing forcefully various types of alienation, The Book of the Courtier restores to the concept of «facility» a new philosophical density, based on love, education and imagination.
