L'industriel et le domestique dans la conception d'appareils électroménagers

In the conception of technical objects for domestic use there exists a dichotomy between the “surface” - including the control panels, the accessories, the instructions - which is for the use of the consumer - and the “interior” where everything which enables the machine to function -motorisation, mechanism, electronic controls - is closed to their access. This type of conception can be considered as a “detechnicalisation” of machines destined for domestic use and we can wonder, as do the feminists working on the question of the social construction of techniques, if this is in fact a gendering of technical objects intended for use by women. Through daily observation of a research and development team for small domestic appliances, I have tried to understand exactly what they do when they introduce this dichotomy into technical objects : how do they establish the boundary between the interior and the exterior, decide what should be hidden from the consumer, to what she should have access, and how and at what point they consider the sex of the consumer.Les innovateurs inscrivent dans les objets techniques destinés à des usages domestiques une dichotomie entre la «surface» - comportant les commandes, les accessoires, les marquages... - qui est mise à la disposition de l'usager, et «l'intérieur» où est enfermé hors d’accès tout ce qui permet le fonctionnement de la machine : motorisation, mécanismes, contrôles électroniques. Ce mode de conception peut être lu comme une «détechnicisation» des machines destinées au travail domestique et on peut se demander, en continuité avec les féministes travaillant sur la construction sociale des techniques, s’il s’agit là d’un processus de sexuation des objets techniques destinés aux femmes. En observant au jour le jour le travail d’une équipe de conception d’une entreprise de petit électroménager, j’ai tenté de comprendre ce que font exactement les innovateurs quand ils dichotomisent les objets techniques : comment ils établissent la frontière entre l'intérieur et l'extérieur, déterminent ce qui doit être caché à l'usager, ce à quoi il doit avoir accès et de quelle manière ; comment ils travaillent sur les parties internes et externes, où intervient la prise en considération du sexe des usagers, et sous quelles formes.Chabaud-Rychter Danielle.
