This article is part of a PhD project at the University of Tubingen. On 16 different skeletal elements (long bones and metapodial bones) of definitely adult individuals, between 8 and 24 measurements have been chosen, in total 245 variables. On 3452 specimens statistical analyses are calculated with the software packages SPSS, SAS and inferiorily R, of which 2980 specimens belong to fossil ursids and, for reason of comparison, 472 specimens to recent bear material (living European brown bear and polar bear). The aim is to find further significantly characteristic distinguishing features between fossil bear species (especially Ursus spelaeus and Ursus deningeri).
