"Caverna Generosa" is an Upper Pleistocene fossili-ferous cave located in the Southern Pre-Alps (Como province -NW Lombardy) not far from the Italian-Swiss border. It yields a great amount of cave bear remains, dated between about 38 and 50 ky bp. The aim of the present study is to record the structure of the various bear populations in this poorly known region. The osteometrical analysis shows that most of the bears denning in the cave were female, with a large percentage of youngs. Data testify, as across the stratigraphie profile, a large number of females is correlated with lower cubs mortality. These facts are probably attributable to climatic and paleoenvironmental causes.
