Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass leads to impaired perfusion of the microcirculation, which may be an important contributor to postoperative organ dysfunction. This thesis combines clinical and animal studies that aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying microcirculatory dysfunction in cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.
