See notes below.Mario Bauza (1911-1993), a Cuban jazz musician who played oboe, clarinet and tumpet, is best known for his collaboration with Dizzy Gillespie and his contributions to Latin jazz. Bauza and Gillespie fused Gillespie's bebop and Bauza's Cuban music into cubop, one of the earliest forms of latin jazz music. Many jazz historians call Bauza the;founding father of Latin jazz; Bauza also worked with Chuck Webb, Ella Fitzgerald, Don Redman and Cab Calloway. He was also the musical director of the Afro-Cubans, a band led by his brother Machito, and led his own band in the 1980s until his death in 1993.Portions of the publicly available digital files for this transcript have been altered to restore them to their original state.Tape 3, Side 2 ends on page 137.
