Adapting Mystic Identity to Italian Mainstream Islam: The Case of a Muslim Rom Community in Florence

This article describes the adaptation of the religious life and rituals of a Macedonian Rom community living in a migrants' camp in Florence, Italy. The chief of this group of Roma is a master of the Khalwatiyya Sufi order. The purpose of this article is to describe the composite identity of this group of Muslim Roma, made up of different layers of cultures and traditions, and the way in which the interaction with the Arab imams of the city has determined some important readjustments in their religious identity and ceremonies.Cet article décrit l'adaptation de la vie et des rituels religieux d'une communauté rom vivant dans un camp de migrants a Florence, en Italie. Le chef de ce groupe de Roms est un maître de l'ordre soufi appelé Khalwatiyya. Le but de cet article est de décrire l'identité complexe de ce groupe de Roms musulmans, faite de différentes strates de cultures et de traditions, ainsi que la manière dont l'interaction avec les imams arabes de la ville a conduit a d'importants ré-ajustements dans leur identité et leurs cérémonies religieuses
