Surrendering to the foreignness in Alexandre Vialatte’s Battling le ténébreux

Alexandre Vialatte’s Battling le ténébreux occupies a strange space between worlds and between languages. His background as a writer-translator imbues the text with a foreignness so that it sits between French and German traditions, and his characters, unable or not-wanting to fit in or understand their world, depict their otherness with foreign and otherworldly art. I present the rich and strange in-between space that the text and its characters inhabit as the source of its wonder, that threshold of the legible. Representative of the novel as a whole, the title “battling le ténébreux” is obscure but brilliant ; the language switch destabilises and enriches. Following this title across languages and literatures, through the intertextual trope of the beau ténébreux, through the romantic despair and the battle against melancholy, the foreign shows itself not as a veil to be lifted but as a materiality in the darkness. In this paper, I explore a foreignness of language as a means of depicting and revealing that inescapable multiplicity and uncertainty.Battling le ténébreux d’Alexandre Vialatte occupe un entre-deux de mondes et de langues. L’expérience de l’auteur en tant que traducteur déplace le texte à mi-chemin entre les traditions littéraires française et allemande. Les personnages, qui ne peuvent ni ne souhaitent s’intégrer dans leur monde, ni le comprendre, s’efforcent de peindre leur altérité en termes d’étrangeté et de différence. Cet article considère la frontière riche et étrange qui s’établit entre ce texte et ses personnages, comme étant à l’origine de son mystère, à la limite du lisible. Le titre, Battling le ténébreux, représentatif du roman dans son ensemble, est à la fois obscur et suggestif : le mélange de langues déstabilise tout en enrichissant la lecture. À travers ce titre et ses différentes implications linguistiques et littéraires, notamment le topos du beau ténébreux, ainsi que le désespoir romantique et son combat contre la mélancolie, l’étrangeté n’apparaît pas comme une complication inutile, mais comme une matérialité dans les ténèbres. Cet article montrera que l’étrangeté du langage est une manière d’illustrer et de révéler la multiplicité, et l’inévitable incertitude
