This paper provides an overview of the crime fiction macro-genre in 20th and early 21st century China, from its development in the late Qing and early Republican period to its elaborations in the Mao and post-Mao era, concluding with an outline of contemporary trends as illustrated by a number of representative authors from the greater China region. The peculiarities and evolution of the macro-genre through the decades are pointed out in order to highlight continuities and discontinuities, as well as the interplay between native and imported literary models. Some considerations on the achievements of Chinese crime fiction and the potential of its internationalization are also made in the final section of the paper
