Sviluppo della crocieristica nel Mediterraneo ed evoluzione delle relazioni città-porto. Fattori critici e questioni aperte nel caso veneziano.

In recent years the position of the Mediterranean within the global cruise market has improved very markedly. The dynamism of the sector – high rate of demand growth, infrastructural modernization, etc. – has relevant impacts on the portcity’s economy, spatial structure, landscape and image. The case of Venice confirms the importance of above elements. As a point of fact, the dramatic development of the cruise market has acted as a fundamental lever in the spatial and functional transformation of Venice waterfronts. Moreover, the dynamism the sector has shown in recent time has opened the way to more co-operative approaches between the port sector and the urban policy. However, the most recent tendencies that are driving the sector’s evolution are responsible for important environmental and territorial problems as well. In particular, the local port industry has to meet the need for continuing improvements of infrastructures and port areas in order to sustain the demand growth and accommodate the gigantism trend that affects the industry at global scale. These elements are causing new problems, and call for new management policy and tools. The most problematic aspect is related to the problem of port expansion in the lagoon. With respect to this, new conflicts between port and urban policy, particularly in the planning process, are emerging. La posizione del Mediterraneo nel mercato mondiale delle crociere è migliorata in maniera molto forte negli anni recenti. Il dinamismo del settore – alto tasso di crescita della domanda, modernizzazione delle infrastrutture, ecc. – ha delle conseguenze importanti per l’economia, la struttura spaziale, il paesaggio e l’immagine delle città portuali. Il caso veneziano conferma l’importanza di questi elementi. Infatti, il fortissimo sviluppo del mercato crocieristico ha agito come leva fondamentale per la trasformazione spaziale e funzionale dei waterfront veneziani. Inoltre, il dinamismo che il settore ha mostrato recentemente ha aperto la strada ad approcci più cooperativi tra il settore portuale e la politica urbana. Allo stesso tempo, tuttavia, le tendenze più recenti che stanno guidando l’evoluzione del settore sono responsabili di importanti problemi ambientali e territoriali. In particolare, la locale industria portuale deve rispondere alla domanda di continui miglioramenti delle infrastrutture e delle aree portuali, allo scopo di sostenere la crescita della domanda e soddisfare la tendenza al gigantismo che coinvolge l’industria a scala globale.
