Audouinella violacea (Kutz.) Hamel, previously unreported from Iowa, was an important member of the epilithon in the Skunk River in central Iowa from March 1972 through January 1973. During most of the summer it was co-dominant with Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kutz. The alga was morphologically similar to the Chantransia -stage of Batrachospermum found elsewhere in Iowa. However, because mature Batrachospermum plants were never encountered in the Skunk River over a five year period, the alga was assumed to be an independent entity
