This study addresses the problem of how to keep middle school students engaged, yet still learning in science class. The purpose of this study is to explore how the use of Problem Based Learning to instruct middle school students about light and its properties affects student engagement, student learning, and teacher perception of the innovative style. Project scores, quiz scores, student engagement observations, student questionnaires, and teacher reflections were analyzed. The data supported the feasibility of implementing PBL to teach within the classroom and the continued use of PBL to teach about light and its properties.
