La nación católica en el liberalismo. Las perspectivas sobre la unidad religiosa en la España liberal, 1808-1868

The article analyzes the historical meanings of the assertion of the catholic unity of the Spanish nation by the 19th Century liberalism. From the starting point of recent assumptions, which renovate the knowledge of the relationships between religion, politics and the nation, the authors consider the wide range of meanings of the illustrated legacy in the 18th Century and the confessional uniformity, enacted by the sovereign nation that the Constitution of 1812 had outlined. Religious denominationalism didn�t prevent any possibility of individual emancipation. On the contrary, early liberalism tended to mutually reinforce both identities, religious and national. At the same time, early liberals were confident that the new social conditions, enacted by liberal governments, should broaden gradually the operational range for the free individuals. Under queen Isabel II liberals kept hope on this way to the progress in confessional matters. However, the situation in the mid-19th Century led progressive liberals to a new expression of their ideas, that weakened their former postulates concerning individual emancipation and the citizens� ability to choiceEl artículo estudia los significados históricos que tuvo la afirmación de la unidad religiosa de la nación española en el liberalismo decimonónico. A partir de las premisas historiográficas que han renovado las reflexiones en torno a las relaciones entre religión, política y nación, los autores analizan la herencia plural de los ilustrados del último tercio del siglo xviii y el sentido de la homogeneidad confesional de la nación soberana, esbozada por la Constitución de 1812. La confesionalidad religiosa no impidió las posibilidades de emancipación individual. Por el contrario, el primer liberalismo tendió a un reforzamiento mutuo de las identidades religiosa y nacional, al tiempo que confió en que las nuevas condiciones sociales creadas ampliarían de manera gradual el margen del individuo emancipado. Esta confianza en una vía de progreso en las creencias se mantuvo en el liberalismo isabelino. Sin embargo, el contexto de mediados del siglo xix llevó al progresismo a una reformulación, que debilitó sus postulados anteriores en torno a la emancipación individual en una nación soberana y confesional y a la capacidad de decisión de los ciudadanos
