The theme of government in the Jesuit missions of Paraguay, is analyzed from a Foucauldian perspective, with special emphasis on the way there occurred a specific form of articulation between pastoral power and biopolitical. In 1966, Foucault said that the Jesuit missions of Paraguay were a wonderful example of colonial heterotopia. The disciplined life controlled biological reproduction of the population. From the contributions of the history of governmentality, it is possible to see how the problem of health and population growth was attended by the Jesuits from their techniques of government and medical knowledge.
