El historiador como autor: éxito y fracaso de la microhistoria

ln this article we make an approach to what the Italian microhistorians do and say they do. We observe a paradox: just when their international success and their historiographical repercussion is bigger, that is the time they decree their own death, close down the collection that they used as a means of diffusion and, finally, admit the disparity of their ways and tasks. We analyze that disparity, especially from the work of Edoardo Grendi and Cario Ginzburg, and we confirm what we said in 1993 and what the microhistorians said right afterwards, in 1994. One of the aspects that distinguishes them and that gives the exact measure of their success and their failure is the unequal attention they pay to the writing of history, to the technique of its presentation and to the way of transmision of information and data. History -as these ltalian investigators maintain- is the search of the truth based on proofs, is evidentia in narratione; but is also -though this is not always admitted by them- rhetoric, persuasion and dramatism. That is why, paraphrasing Geertz, we could add that, just like the antropologist, the historian is also an author.En este artículo nos aproximamos a lo que hacen y a lo que dicen que hacen los microhistoriadores italianos. Constatamos una paradoja: cuando mayores son su éxito internacional y su resonancia historiográfica, es justamente cuando ellos mismos decretan su muerte, cierran la colección que les sirvió de canal de difusión y admiten finalmente la disparidad de sus formas y quehaceres. Analizamos esa disparidad, sobre todo a partir de la obra de Edoardo Grendi y Cario Ginzburg, y contrastamos lo que nosotros mismos decíamos en 1993 y lo que los microhistoriadores han dicho después, en 1994. Uno de los aspectos que los distinguen y que da la medida exacta de su éxito y de su fracaso es la atención desigual que prestan a la escritura de la historia, a la técnica de exposición y al modo de transmisión de las informaciones. La historia -sostienen estos investigadores italianos-es la búsqueda de la verdad basada en pruebas, es evidentia in narratione; pero es también -aunque no siempre lo admitan- retórica, persuasión y dramatismo.
