In this article we present the work carried out from the analysis of a school book used in Spain at the end of the 18th century, the "Guía del niño instruido y padre educado" ( Guide for the Educated Child and Parent) and its proposals for the teaching of reading and writing. Its author, Francisco Gabriel Malo de Medina, presents new methods for the learning of both skills, which were very advanced for their time. Among these methods we can single out the simultaneous learning of reading and writing or the use of new techniques for the teaching of writing.
