Objeción de conciencia

The basis of conscientious objection is the freedom of conscience. It is prerogative of the medical professional to stand against the realization of a legally or administratively decreed procedure or intervention as it threatens his philosophical or religious beliefs. The conscientious objection does not take place freely. It must respect the bioethical principles and the rights of the persons. When it is used inadequately it may threaten bioethical principles mainly autonomy and non-maleficence. It may threaten the life and health of patients and may conduce to legal problems to doctors and to the institutions where they work.La objeción de conciencia tiene su sustento en la libertad de conciencia. Es una prerrogativa del profesional médico de oponerse a la realización de un procedimiento o intervención dispuesto legal o administrativamente, debido a que ello atenta contra sus convicciones filosóficas o religiosas. La objeción de conciencia no opera libremente. Debe respetar los principios bioéticos y los derechos de las personas. Cuando se le usa en forma inadecuada puede atentar contra los principios bioéticos, principalmente la autonomía y la no maleficencia; puede atentar contra la vida y la salud de las pacientes y puede conducir a problemas legales a los médicos y a las instituciones en donde laboran
