Empire, imperialism or spartan hegemony? A conceptual harmonization for Sparta in late Fifth Century BC

After the defeat of Athens in the Peloponnesian War, it is confirmed the loss of military-political balance in Greece, for the benefit of Sparta. The political dominance that treasured the peloponnesian city from 404 BC until 371 BC, led some authors to call this period �Spartan hegemony�. However, military expansion to Asia and deep political intervention in internal affairs of other Greek cities by Sparta, led to other authors to use the term �imperialism�, or even Spartan Empire. The objective of this article is to analyze the definition of each of these three concepts and trying to establish a conceptual harmonization to refer to that period.Tras la derrota de Atenas en la Guerra del Peloponeso, se constata la pérdida de equilibrio político-militar en Grecia, en beneficio de Esparta. El predominio político que atesoró la ciudad peloponesia desde 404 a. C. hasta 371 a. C., llevó a algunos autores a hablar de hegemonía espartana para referirse a dicho período. Sin embargo, la expansión militar a Asia y el profundo intervencionismo político lacedemonio en asuntos internos de otras ciudades, hizo que otros autores prefirieran utilizar el término �imperialismo�, cuando no directamente el de imperio espartano. El objetivo de este artículo será analizar la definición de cada uno de estos tres conceptos y tratar de establecer una armonización conceptual para referirse a dicho período
