If we tried to outline the very important matters around the Athenian Maritime Empire it would be necessary to formulate one question: did Athens really behave as an imperialistic power? This question includes very different aspects. The military one is the most obvious since a striking and destructive intervention against an ally, defines clearly the commander's attitude. Nowadays, economy has been underlined and not without reason. A policy, openly protectionist of the Athenian trade interesse and that was detrimental to the allies, would be conclusive when judging interests and attitudes.
