Athens: an imperialist power? | Atenas: ¿un imperialismo?

If we tried to outline the very important matters around the Athenian Maritime Empire it would be necessary to formulate one question: did Athens really behave as an imperialistic power? This question includes very different aspects. The military one is the most obvious since a striking and destructive intervention against an ally, defines clearly the commander's attitude. Nowadays, economy has been underlined and not without reason. A policy, openly protectionist of the Athenian trade interesse and that was detrimental to the allies, would be conclusive when judging interests and attitudes. This aspect also involves the monetary angle since was possible to play for or against a state. The legal and administrative side which are at times quite linked in the Antiquity, have a special importance because Athens appeared before the allies as the Polis that respect and defends the demands of the citizens. Even religion is at stake, since it's not the same to privilege the fame of the Delian Sanctuary, the Delphian or the Partenian. To resolve the definitive judgment about the Athenian Maritime Empire, it will be necessary to balance many elements and to take into account the archaelogical, literary, epigraphic and numismatic data which will guarantee the hier accomplished analysis. | Si esquematizamos los interrogantes más importantes en torno al Imperio Marítimo Ateniense, tendremos que formular una pregunta: ¿se comportó Atenas realmente como una potencia imperialista? Esta cuestión incluye aspectos muy dispares. Lo militar llama más la atención, porque una intervención fulminante y destructora contra un aliado define sobradamente la actitud de mando. Una política descaradamente proteccionista de los intereses comerciales de Atenas en perjuicio de los aliados sería definitiva para dictaminar sobre sus intenciones y actitudes. Esta faceta extiende sus dominios hasta el ángulo monetario, donde se juega a favor o en contra de un Estado. La vertiente jurídica y administrativa, a veces bastante unida en la Antigüedad, posee un relieve singular, ya que Atenas se presenta ante sus aliados como la polis que mejor respeta y defiende las demandas de los ciudadanos particulares. Hasta la religión entra en litigio, pues no es lo mismo privilegiar la fama del santuario délico, la del délfico o la del Partenón. Para solventar el juicio definitivo sobre el Imperio Marítimo Ateniense, habrá que poner aún en la balanza muchos elementos y contar con datos arqueológicos, literarios, epigráficos, numismáticos, que avalen los análisis aquí realizados
