Biblioiconografía y literatura popular impresa: la ilustración de los pliegos sueltos burgaleses (o de babuines y estampas celestinescas

This paper focuses on the study of illustrations in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth-century chapbooks printed in Burgos from the perspective of Biblioiconography or Textual Iconography. In order to discuss the use and function of these images, it is necessary to combine the analysis of the design features of the chap-books with the methodology of physical or analytical bibliography, which provides an exhaustive inventory of the origin, modification and trajectory of the blocks together with information on the woodcuts preserved in the inventories of the Burgos’ printing ateliers. The aim of this article is to clarify the strategies used in the illustrations of these chapbooks in connection with the materials available at each printing atelier, as well as their peculiarities and differences with regard to the illustration of other editorial genres of popular literature. These assumptions have allowed the author to perceive very significant patterns in the illustration of these works, such as the preference for some 'scenes' or 'stories' to llustrate romances and similar texts, or the role of factotum (also called “babuines,” a term that is explained here for the first time) associated with festive, dialogical and dramatic chapbooks. At the same time, this research provides a hypothesis on the origin of several blocks that formed a series of scenes and were used to illustrate the earliest editions of short chivalric stories. Finally, this paper presents an exhaustive history of the use of the suite in the Burgos’ Celestina and offers a theory on the technical procedures utilized in the design of some common elements in the illustrated scenes used in the printing of this CelestinaEste trabajo aborda el estudio de la ilustración del 'corpus' de pliegos sueltos burgaleses del siglo XV y XVI, para el que disponemos de delimitación editorial y cronológica precisa, desde la perspectiva de la Biblioiconografía o "Textual Iconography", conjugando el 'analysis of design features' de los pliegos con la metodología tipo bibliográfica –que facilita inventarios exhaustivos del origen, uso, trayectoria y modificación de los materiales ilustrativos–, y con los datos rastreables sobre las xilografías en los inventarios conservados de las imprentas. El objeto es desentrañar las estrategias de ilustración de los pliegos, en relación con los materiales disponibles en cada taller, así como las peculiaridades y diferencias con respecto a la ilustración de otros géneros editoriales de literatura popular. Esto ha permitido verificar la preferencia por las 'escenas' o 'historias' para ilustrar pliegos de romances y textos afines, frente al uso de las figuritas factótum o 'babuines' –denominación de época que se documenta por primera vez– asociadas a los pliegos de carácter festivo, dialógico y teatral. Finalmente se propone un ensayo de arqueología biblioiconográfica formulando la hipótesis del origen de algunas estampas en las series de escenas entalladas para las ediciones más tempranas de las historias caballerescas breves, y se detalla la trayectoria de la suite de la 2Celestina" burgalesa, esbozando una hipótesis sobre el procedimiento técnico aplicado para el diseño de algunos elementos de sus escenas
