The purpose of this article is to analyze the teaching for understanding approach, from a theoretical and practical perspective in order to generate reflection and innovation in classroom practices. In this sense, it stresses the concepts, elements and dimensions of teaching for understanding and the need to make thinking visible in the school, as an opportunity to improve the teaching and learning processes. The author emphasizes on the need to renew teaching practices with basis on the routines of thought and the development of metacognition in the context of teaching for understanding.
