This article explores ´public writingª and its archives, in relation to the exercise of domination and social control. The first part describes the unwritten character of native languages in the political-administrative procedures that existed before the Conquest, and it shows how oral broadcasts were the socializing and aculturating instruments of the native populations. The second part demonstrates how, in colonial American cities, written documents as well as archives were instruments for the extensiÛn of the administrative and ideological control of the Spanish empire, in order to bind the Old World with the New one and preserve its control; it is argued that teaching natives to read and write, as part of the conquerorís political and r...
