The growing recognition of the multicultural nature of our societies, underpinned by the progressive visibility of indigenous cultures in Latin America, has raised the need to develop educational projects that address the socio-cultural diversity. In this scenario, the author of this article will initiate a reflection on the need to include ethnomathematics in mathematics curricula that are part of the cultural heritage of peoples. By analyzing the history of education in Latin America, we can see that schools, erected on a monocultural perspective whose reference culture has been primarily a Eurocentric culture, have been part of projects of nationalization.
