Etnomatemáticas y currículo: Una relación necesaria

The growing recognition of the multicultural nature of our societies, underpinned by the progressive visibility of indigenous cultures in Latin America, has raised the need to develop educational projects that address the socio-cultural diversity. In this scenario, the author of this article will initiate a reflection on the need to include ethnomathematics in mathematics curricula that are part of the cultural heritage of peoples. By analyzing the history of education in Latin America, we can see that schools, erected on a monocultural perspective whose reference culture has been primarily a Eurocentric culture, have been part of projects of nationalization. This paper reflects on the role played by mathematics education in this context. It also shows how the idea of ​​a single, universal mathematics, disconnected environments and social practices that give rise to them has allowed for an exclusion of mathematical knowledge, ways of thinking, and knowing and doing cultures, thus limiting the potential development mathematical thinking of indigenous and non-indigenous students, and adding to the loss of cultural identity of indigenous peoples. For this reason, we propose that today it is essential to change the view of mathematics, and include indigenous ethnomathematics in curricula. Thus, along with opening up the possibility to enrich the mathematical thinking of indigenous and non- indigenous students, it is possible to contribute to the preservation of the identity of indigenous cultures, and promote the development of a mathematical education that promotes a critical sociocultural perspective and equity.El creciente reconocimiento del carácter pluricultural de nuestras sociedades -sustentado en la visibilización progresiva de las culturas indígenas en Latinoamérica- ha planteado la necesidad de desarrollar proyectos educativos que atiendan esa diversidad sociocultural. En ese escenario, la autora de este artículo quiere abrir la reflexión en torno a la necesidad de incluir las etnomatemáticas en los currículos de matemáticas porque forman parte del patrimonio cultural de los pueblos.Al analizar la historia de la educación en Latinoamérica, es posible observar que las escuelas, erigidas sobre una perspectiva monocultural cuya cultura de referencia ha sido principalmente la cultura eurocéntrica, han sido parte de los proyectos de nacionalización. Este texto reflexiona sobre el rol que ha jugado la educación matemática en ese contexto. Y muestra cómo la idea de una matemática única, universal, desconectada de los entornos y de las prácticas sociales que les dan origen ha permitido excluir los conocimientos matemáticos, las formas de razonar, de conocer y de hacer de las culturas, limitando el desarrollo potencial del pensamiento matemático de estudiantes indígenas y no indígenas, y acrecentando la pérdida de la identidad cultural de los pueblos originarios. Por esta razón, se plantea que hoy en día resulta imprescindible cambiar la visión de las matemáticas, e incluir las etnomatemáticas indígenas en los currículos. Así, junto con abrir la posibilidad de enriquecer el pensamiento matemático de estudiantes indígenas y no indígenas, será posible contribuir a la preservación de la identidad de las culturas indígenas, y promover el desarrollo de una educación matemática que promueva una perspectiva crítica y con equidad sociocultural.
