A repressão franquista na língua galega. A desfeita de uma realidade linguística, cultural e nacional

Galician, originally Galician-Portuguese, is a vivid language in its spoken form, which from the second half of the 19th Century to the first third of the 20th begins to restore the usual purposes of an official and standard language. Francoist repression in the year 1936 submits people to a forty-year dictatorship, imposes Spanish as the only compulsory and official language forcing Galician to become a minor language regarding its written usage and diminishing its spoken usage too. Only people in exile, mainly in America, were able to continue publishing, writing literature and denouncing the political, social and linguistic tyranny. These totalitarian decades were the key factors to develop the linguistic conflict and diglossic situation which still exists in Galiza.A língua galega, originariamente galego-português, é um idioma de grande vitalidade oral, que da segunda metade do século XIX até o primeiro terço do XX começa a recuperar a normalidade de funções duma língua culta e cooficial. A repressão franquista de 1936 submete o povo em uma ditadura de quarenta anos, impõe o castelhano como único idioma obrigatório e oficial e condena a língua própria da Galiza à marginalidade a respeito dos usos escritos, degradando também seus usos orais. Só o exílio, nomeadamente o americano, manteve nessa altura a edição, a literatura e a denúncia da tirania política, social e linguística. Estas décadas totalitárias foram perniciosas para desenvolver o conflito linguístico e a situação de diglossia que há atualmente na Galiza
