Machismo, victimización y perpetración en mujeres y hombres mexicanos

Machismo has been proposed as a risk factor for female victimization and male perpetration; however, its effect and directionality are not clear. The aims of this article were to determinate the internal consistency and factor structure of a scale of machismo; describe levels of machismo; study the relationship of machismo with the victimization/perpetration phenomena and demographic variables; and contrast models of violence and machismo. The Questionnaire of Suffered and Exerted Couple Violence and the modified Scale of Machismo from the Questionnaire of Historic-Sociocultural Premises were applied to an incidental sample of 120 women and 120 men. The scale showed high internal consistency and one-dimensional structure. There was significant mean difference between both sexes. Women exhibited disagreement with the machismo and men ambiguity. In both sexes the violence was reactive. Higher levels of machismo predicted higher levels of perpetration in women and total sample, and lower levels of victimization in the total sample. A larger number of children predicted higher levels of victimization in the three samples, and higher levels of perpetration in men and in the total sample. It is concluded that the modified scale has better psychometric properties than the original scale. Machismo is more associated to perpetration than to victimization, this association is greater in women than in men, and its magnitude is small.Se ha propuesto al machismo como factor de riesgo de victimización femenina y perpetración masculina, pero su efecto y direccionalidad no están claros. Este artículo tiene como objetivos: determinar la consistencia interna y estructura factorial de una escala de machismo; describir niveles de machismo; estudiar la relación del machismo con victimización/perpetración y variables demográficas; y contrastar modelos de violencia y machismo. El cuestionario de violencia sufrida y ejercida de pareja y la escala modificada de machismo del cuestionario de premisas histórico-socioculturales fueron aplicados a una muestra incidental de 120 mujeres y 120 hombres. La escala de machismo presentó consistencia interna alta y estructura unidimensional. Hubo diferencia significativa de medias entre ambos sexos. Las mujeres mostraron desacuerdo con el machismo y los hombres ambigüedad. En ambos sexos la violencia fue reactiva. Machismo predijo mayor perpetración en mujeres y muestra conjunta y menor victimización en muestra conjunta. Número de hijos predijo mayor victimización en las tres muestras y mayor perpetración en hombres y muestra conjunta. Se concluye que la escala modificada posee mejores propiedades psicométricas que la original. El machismo se asocia más con perpetración que con victimización, esta asociación es mayor en mujeres que en hombres y su magnitud es pequeña
