This article offers a comparative socio-historical study of the well-known play La tonta del bote (1925) by Pilar Millán Astray and two of its film adaptations, Ricardo Núñez's La chica del barrio (1956) and Juan de Orduña's 1970 version, La tonta del bote. As a recreation in the form of a sainete of the tale of Cinderella, the original play is a rather radical reworking of a genre and an archetype which are usually considered to be highly conservative, especially with regard to the situation of women.
