Una Cenicienta española: la tonta del bote y sus adaptaciones cinematográficas

This article offers a comparative socio-historical study of the well-known play La tonta del bote (1925) by Pilar Millán Astray and two of its film adaptations, Ricardo Núñez's La chica del barrio (1956) and Juan de Orduña's 1970 version, La tonta del bote. As a recreation in the form of a sainete of the tale of Cinderella, the original play is a rather radical reworking of a genre and an archetype which are usually considered to be highly conservative, especially with regard to the situation of women. An analysis of the two film adaptations, very much in tune with the reigning mentality of the Franco regime and appearing at two crucial moments for Spanish society, reveals the tensions and contradictions that characterized the period and how the moderately "regenerationist" message of Millán Astray was manipulated, not always successfully, in the defense of the regime's traditionalist and conservative values.Este artículo ofrece un estudio comparativo socio-histórico de la célebre obra teatral La tonta del bote de Pilar Millán Astray y sus dos adaptaciones cinematográficas, La chica del barrio (1956) de Ricardo Núñez y La tonta del bote (1970) de Juan de Orduña. Como sainete inspirado en el cuento de la Cenicienta, la obra de Millán Astray constituye una versión bastante radical de un género y un arquetipo normalmente más representativos de los valores conservadores, sobre todo con respecto a la situación de la mujer. El análisis de las dos adaptaciones cinematográficas, muy en sintonía con la mentalidad imperante en el régimen franquista y que aparecieron en dos momentos decisivos para la sociedad española, revela las tensiones y las contradicciones que caracterizaban a esta época y cómo el mensaje moderadamente regeneracionista de Millán Astray fue manipulado, no siempre con éxito, en aras de una defensa de los valores tradicionalistas y conservadores
